I started watching Abby’s story and realized just how similar she was to me. She was involved in everything in high school and pushed herself to do well. Her parents were strong Christians. They provided a stable home surrounding her with love and support. My heart went out to her as she entered college and made some wrong choices that just built on each other. The question to consider here is “How would I have responded?”
As I watched Abby begin her journey as a volunteer with Planned Parenthood, “speaking the truth in love” came to mind from Ephesians. We must respond with both. (Great reminder!) These are women in crises. They need our help and compassion, not our condemnation. The baby AND the mother need our love and protection. They BOTH are made in the image of God.
I was very impressed with how her parents handled her choices. They loved her (and she knew it), but she also knew they were concerned about what she was doing with her life. They wanted to stay close and not cut her off. They prayed for her and loved her. (They are a good example for all with family and friends making wrong choices.)
The Coalition for Life in Bryan/College Station, Texas began their 40 days for life. It was a peace filled time, full of prayer and people offering information to the woman going to the Planned Parenthood Clinic that Abby now ran. By this time many issues had been bothering Abby. She had been given instructions that made it clear that the clinic was a business, when she thought they were supposed to be helping women in crisis. Abby’s breaking point came when she was needed to help with an ultrasound guided abortion. My heart broke for her again as, through the ultrasound, she realized the truth about what was going on with the baby during the abortion.
Abby had been treated kindly by the Coalition for Life staff and volunteers, so she reached out to them. She knew that she couldn’t be a part of Planned Parenthood. The “feisty” advocate for abortion changed her passion. She is now using her gifts and talents to fight for the unborn. She listens to and helps the women who have gone through an abortion find compassion and healing. Abby has seen and experienced both sides. She understands the many issues and can speak to more people.
I few quotes I want to share from the DVD
- Advice from former abortion provider, Haywood J. Robinson, M.D., “We must continue to pray and not look at the people in the inside [Planned Parenthood] as the enemy.”
- “We can’t change our past. But if we dwell on it, it won’t allow our hearts and our minds to really glorify God the way that we should. Accepting God’ forgiveness is kind of an easy part of it, I think, because we know He will forgive us for anything, but being able to forgive ourselves – I think that’s harder. I’ve turned away from the wrong things I was doing, the evil things that I was participating in. I have turned back to Him, and following Him, and so even the eight years of wrong that I was participating in, He’s now blessing that for good.” –Abby Johnson
(Tyndale House Publishers has provided me with a complimentary copy of this DVD for my honest review.)
